NEWINGTON

Coach: Chris Wanner (1st year)

Last year: 7-13

Key losses: Lexi Sousa, Gabi Grachev, Nicole Forcellina, Amy Blaire

Key returnees: Sarah Ericson (Sr. OH), Carly Wanner-Hyde (Sr. setter), Alyssa Bellizzi (Sr. MB), Megan Willgoos (Sr. OH), Victoria Usmanova (Sr. UT), Kaitlyn Bernacki (Sr. L), Meghan Roberts (soph. MB).

Outlook: The Indians lost some talent, but only two starters. This year’s group has tons of experience and should be able to take a shot at the league. Even the new coach, Wanner, has experience, having coached at Southington throughout the 1990s. Wanner-Hyde’s return from an injury which cost her most of last year is key for Newington since she runs the show on the floor. Ericson does a lot of things well and Bellizzi and Roberts should be able to take care of the middle defensively. Bernacki is another defensive presence while Willgoos should help lead the offense.

“This year’s team is experienced and is ready to step into the open positions,” Wanner said. “They are working with intensity to be a great team.” If the middle blockers can also help on offense, Newington should be a team to watch this year. At the very least, the one more win needed to make the state tournament seems attainable.
