Newington

Coach: Pat Douglas (eight season, two at school)

Last year: 10-11

Key losses: Stasha Greenalch (OH), Alicia Greenalch (L), and Amanda Loffredo (L/DS).

Key returnees: Carly Wanner-Hyde (junior, S), Gabby Gratchev (senior, OH), Lexi Souza (senior, OH), Kaitlyn Bernacki (junior, L/DS), Natalia Rozio (senior, MH), Nicole Forcellina (senior, L/DS), Amy Blair (senior, MH), Alyssa Bellizzi (junior, MH/OPP) and Megan Willgoos (junior, OH).

Outlook: Pat Douglas has had quite the first two seasons at the helm in Newington. His first season couldn’t have gone any worse, as the team failed to win a single game. But Year 2 was a whole different story with a trip to the Class LL Tournament with a 10-10 record. They were quickly eliminated in the first round, but it was quite the success story. And Douglas believes this team might be the best he’s had at Newington.

“This is probably the strongest team I’ve had in the three years I’ve been with the program,” he said. “After going from 0-18 my first season to qualifying for the state tournament last season, you could tell that our returning players have that desire to continue building on the successes we achieved in ‘13.”

The team will have to make up for the loss of three key players, but Douglas believes the transition is going well.

“Coming in to the season we knew that we’d have to replace some important pieces that helped us qualify for the Class LL tournament, but so far everyone has done their part to ensure that it’ll be a smooth transition,” he said.
